The Pakistan Cricket Board have suspended the central contract of former skipper Shahid Afridi, they confirmed on Wednesday.

Afridi announced his retirement to the media on Monday claiming he had been mistreated by the PCB, but the governing body say that is in breach of his contract.

Afridi was axed as the national captain despite a 3-2 one-day series win against West Indies and the all-rounder has now been given seven days to respond to a show cause notice about remarks made to the media about the board.

A PCB statement read: "A show cause notice has been issued to him seeking his explanation on these comments. Afridi has been asked to respond to the letter within seven days of receipt of the same.

"By announcing his retirement in the manner that he did Shahid Afridi is in breach of Clause 2.1.4 of the Central Contract dealing with Covenants of the Cricketer.

"In passing disparaging remarks about the board and its officials Shahid Afridi is in breach of Clause 4.4 dealing with Media obligations.

"His Central Contract has been suspended with immediate effect. Consequently, all NOCs (No Objection Certificates) granted to him have been revoked. All payments on account of Central Contract have been suspended."

The revoking of Afridi's NOCs mean he will be unavailable to play for Hampshire's twenty20 side as well as the inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League.
