Perfect start for Ennis

12 April 2012

Britain's Jessica Ennis made the perfect start to her bid for gold in the World Championships heptathlon in Berlin.

Ennis won the opening heat of the first of seven disciplines, the 100 metres hurdles, in 12.93 seconds - a time which none of the other athletes was able to match.

The 23-year-old from Sheffield therefore took an early lead in the two-day competition with 1,135 points, 76 ahead of France's Ida Nana Djimou (13.44secs) - Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska way back in 19th with 1,000 points, after clocking 13.85s.

"I'm really pleased," said Ennis, whose personal best of 6,587 points - set on her comeback from injury earlier this season - is the best in the world this year.

"It's always great to get a good start in the first event. Now I just want to get on with the high jump."

Team-mate Louise Hazel also won her heat in 13.60 to lie joint seventh with 1,036 points.

Ennis completed a perfect morning's work with victory in the high jump as well, the only competitor to clear 1.92m.

After waiting until the bar was at 1.74m before entering the competition, Ennis cleared each height at the first attempt before needing two jumps to clear 1.92m.

She then failed with three attempts to equal her personal best and British record of 1.95m but could still be hugely satisfied with a lead of 181 points over American Sharon Day after two events.

Dobrynska cleared 1.83m in the high jump to improve to sixth place, 251 points behind Ennis, while Hazel had slipped back to 16th after clearing 1.71m.
