Phelps bid for eight golds ends

12 April 2012

Michael Phelps' quest for a record eight gold medals at the FINA World Swimming Championships came to an end on Sunday after the United States were disqualified from the men's 400 metre medley relay.

Earlier on Sunday, the 21-year-old Phelps put himself in contention for a seventh gold as he advanced to the 400m individual medley final.

Having already won a record-equalling six golds in Melbourne he was expected to make it eight today but has now lost his chance after butterflyer Ian Crocker dove in too early with Scott Usher still to complete his breaststroke leg.
