Phillies refuse to give up the chase

The 2009 World Series will be decided at the new Yankee Stadium after the Philadelphia Phillies clinched victory in the fifth match.

Seeking the win which would have secured their 27th title, the New York Yankees found themselves trailing 6-1 by the end of the third inning.

That became 8-2 at the bottom of the seventh, and despite a Yankees fightback the visitors had left themselves with too much work to do.

Chase Utley's two home runs for the Phillies means he now has five in the series, equalling the World Series record, and the Yankees have plenty of work still to do after having their lead slashed to 3-2.

The Yankees went ahead but Utley's three-run homer put the Phillies in front after the first inning, and he smashed the ball into the stands again in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-2.

Scores from Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada meant it was tense at the finish, before the Citizens Bank Stadium erupted as the Phillies stepped up the defence of their title..

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel hailed Utley's display and is backing him to shine again in tomorrow's sixth match.

Manuel said: "When Chase gets hot, he can stay hot for a month or two."
