Police probe new snooker bet row

13 April 2012

Police are investigating the result of the UK Championship match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett.

World Snooker were contacted before the match in December by bookmakers, who reported heavy gambling on Maguire winning the first-round tie at Telford 9-3.

Maguire won by that score after Burnett missed a black in the 12th frame, which would have reduced his arrears to 8-4.

Maguire, who is from Glasgow, and Burnett, from Hamilton, say they have nothing to hide and will comply with any probe by Strathclyde Poilce.

Maguire released a statement through his management company, 110sport, which said "it was ludicrous to suggest he would in any way be involved in alleged unusual betting activity."
