Protesting fans stop gym final

13 April 2012

Angry fans stopped the final of the men's gymnastics high bar for 10 minutes as they booed judges for a poor score that destroyed Russian Alexei Nemov's chance of a 13th Olympic medal.

The competition resumed only when Nemov appealed for calm.

Italy's Igor Cassina went on to win the gold medal with a score of 9.812.

Nemov, 28, a 12-time Olympic medallist, wowed the crowd with his routine but was awarded only 9.725 and failed to make the podium.

The crowd's anger forced a remarkable change by the judges who upgraded his score to 9.762 - which left him in fifth place at the end of the competition.
