Querrey's in the frame for top prize

13 April 2012

Sam Querrey will spend longer than normal looking at the pictures of the tennis greats that adorn the walls of Queen's Club today.

As the AEGON Championships defending champion, Querrey has a vested interest in the gallery because he now hangs alongside fellow Americans such as Pete Sampras, Todd Martin, John McEnroe, Stan Smith, Jimmy Connors and Andy Roddick in framed glory.

Querrey said: "I am on the wall with guys who are legends. The walls have a lot of Wimbledon and US Open champions up there and the names are also on that great trophy. To be with them is a real honour. Hopefully, I can get back on that wall again this year.

"I love the grass now after not getting on that well with it in my first couple of years. Every year gives you more confidence and even Pete Sampras initially had some problems on the surface."

Querrey, who will begin his campaign at Queen's with a match against Japan's Kei Nishikori, had an unusual build-up to his last grass-court season, preferring to chill out on the California beaches and only practise on the grass surface after arriving at Queen's, who are celebrating their 125th year. This followed a first-round exit at the French Open which left him frustrated and in need of time away from the game. Having won a round at Roland Garros this year, he feels better equipped to make an impact on grass.

"In Paris this year, I wanted to win a match which is what I achieved and that has been my best French Open ever," said the world No25, who took time out from his preparations for his title defence to lead an AEGON Return to Tennis masterclass, designed to remind lapsed players that tennis is for all ages and abilities.

"I had to take that away as a positive because I felt like I am playing well. If I keep working hard, then hopefully I can jump into the top 10. My game suits grass and I can do well here."
