Quinn: Bravery needed at The Valley

Leo Spall13 April 2012

Niall Quinn admits that Charlton will face a Sunderland side in the middle of a confidence crisis tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland striker said belief among Peter Reid's team is lower than it has been at any time in the three years since they returned to the Premiership.

Quinn and his team-mates have lost five of their last seven games and scored just 26 goals all season, with only nine coming in matches away from home.

It has left Sunderland just two points above Ipswich in the last remaining relegation place with one game to play after facing Charlton at The Valley.

Quinn said: "Tomorrow's game is possibly our most important since we got back into the Premiership.

"Confidence is hitting an alltime low at the club and we have got one of the worst scoring records in the Premiership.

"We need to be brave and find some confidence from somewhere because I think we are only one more win away from survival.

"Ipswich's last two games are against Manchester United and Liverpool and I cannot see them getting all six points. They could maybe get four points from those games but if we get a win that will not be enough.

"So the Charlton game is very important for us and we will have to give it everything. I got a couple of goals against them when we played at home and, hopefully, I can do the same again."

Charlton defender Chris Powell is doubtful because of a groin strain but Mathias Svensson could return after illness.

Sunderland will be without suspended midfielders Claudio Reyna and Gavin McCann, while Kevin Phillips is doubtful with an ankle injury.
