Rain halts play in Cardiff

SWALEC Stadium
12 April 2012

Morning rain in Cardiff forced an early lunch on day three of the first npower Test between England and Sri Lanka.

Off the pitch there was even worse news for England, with confirmation that James Anderson was unfit to bowl for the remainder of the match, potentially putting undue strain on their two remaining seamers Chris Tremlett and Stuart Broad.

They may not be required to do that much extra work if rain continues in Cardiff, though, with no play due before an early lunch at 12.30pm.

With 42 overs lost on the opening day due to heavy showers, the sides were able to get a full day's play yesterday with Sri Lanka making 400 all out and the hosts replying with 47 for one by stumps.

But early morning conditions at the SWALEC Stadium rendered an 11am start impossible and the covers remained in place in the middle.

With more time now being taken out of the game, a draw looks the most likely result for England's first Test since their Ashes success Down Under.

A late finish today is possible but neither side looks in prime position to push for a result.
