Redknapp's wheeling and dealing

Ken Dyer13 April 2012

Harry Redknapp once admitted he wasn't happy unless he was doing deals.

In his seven years in charge, according to official records, a total of 134 players either came to the club or left it. Of that vast number, none were more valuable than John Hartson and Paul Kitson, signed in the winter of 1997 when relegation looked a near-certainty for West Ham.

The pair immediately struck up an understanding and between them scored the goals which ensured the club's status for another year.

Redknapp's signings were largely astute, but it was those towards the end of his seven-year old spell that provoked criticism. After the £18 million-sale of Rio Ferdinand to Leeds, he bought - among others - Titi Camara and Rigobert Song from Liverpool for a total of £4.2m.

However, striker Frederic Kanoute - another Redknapp signing - was bought from Lyon for £3.75m last year and is now worth £12m while strike partner Paolo Di Canio came for a cut-price £1.75m after his troubles at Sheffield Wednesday. Camara, in contrast, has made just five Premiership appearances since his December 2000 move.

Since taking over, Glenn Roeder has spent £3.25m on goalkeeper David James plus £5m on Czech international Tomas Repka and a similar amount on Don Hutchison from Sunderland.
