Reina peps up Liverpool's trophy hunt

13 April 2012

Pepe Reina's record-equalling start to the season has reinforced his belief that Liverpool can now mount a serious challenge at home and abroad.

The Spain goalkeeper has claimed another distinction with five clean sheets in the Premier League so far — equalling the mark set by Ray Clemence at the start of the 1977 campaign.

Jose Reina has shone for Liverpool this season

The 25-year-old, beaten only twice in the League so far, both times from the spot, said: 'We know that to win the most important thing is to keep clean sheets, then we have possibilities to score with the quality of players we have here.'

Marseille visit Anfield in the Champions League tomorrow and Reina has so far conceded only one goal in Europe — against Porto — again from a penalty.

He added: 'We are very proud of the record but we all defend together, so it's everyone's record.'

Liverpool, meanwhile, fear that their return to Istanbul for the match against Beskitas on October 24 could turn into a nightmare for fans.

They took the unusual step of informing supporters about their worries on the official website last night.

They pointed out that the visiting supporters' area is enclosed by high metal fences on three sides and the view of the pitch is extremely poor.

Steven Gerrard was said last night to be 'distressed' after an accident in Birkdale, in which his car was in collision with a 10-yearold boy, who suffered a suspected broken leg.
