Rovers take comfortable win

12 April 2012

Goals in each half from Benni McCarthy and Matt Derbyshire gave Blackburn a precious 2-0 lead over FK Vetra in the first leg of their Intertoto Cup third-round clash at the Vetra Stadium.

The South African struck in the 29th minute, volleying home Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross from close range after a neat set-piece before Derbyshire completed the victory with a 25-yard strike 10 minutes from full-time.

Mark Hughes' side, who host the return leg against the Lithuanians at Ewood Park on Saturday, are now firm favourites to reach the UEFA Cup second qualifying round, the final hurdle before the first round.
