Andy Irvine proud to be named Lion king for Australia tour

10 April 2012

Andy Irvine was today appointed team manager for the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia.

The former Scotland full-back could be joined on the tour by compatriot Ian McGeechan, who has already been appointed a consultant to help plan the trip.

McGeechan was Lions head coach in South Africa last year and said at the time it would be his last tour. However, it is understood he is prepared to make himself available having taken up a consultative role with Bath which keeps him in daily contact with the sport.

Irvine will be a popular choice as team manager, having toured with the Lions in 1974, 1977 and 1980 and making 41 appearances for them. He has been president of the Scottish Rugby Union.

Gerald Davies was team manager in South Africa last year and now assumes the role of chairman of British Lions Ltd, the company which ensures the tours are a financial success by generating funds for all four Home Unions.

Irvine said: "I feel honoured to be able to take on the role of tour manager. Last year's tour was a phenomenal showcase for rugby and I look forward to upholding the best Lions traditions. I can't wait to get my teeth into the planning and logistics that will be crucial to the success of the tour."

Davies believes the Lions can repeat their 1989 Test series triumph in Australia, achieved under McGeechan. He added: "The Lions remains one of the greatest adventures in modern rugby and I look forward to sharing in the unique spirit of the Lions."

The trip to Australia will also feature a warm-up game against the Barbarians in Hong Kong.
