Japan and Samoa both know they must win tonight to keep their hopes live of reaching the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals.

Samoa narrowly beat the Brave Blossoms 24-22 in July during the Pacific Nations Cup, though Japan that day played most of the game a man down after Michael Leitch's red card.

Argentina's win over Samoa at the weekend has blown Pool D wide open, with the Pacific Islands guilty of an error-strewn display which also featured 13 penalties conceded, 36 missed tackles and two lineouts stolen.

Defeat will surely spell the end of the road for the loser. In the last round of pool games, Japan face Argentina and Samoa take on England.
