Plenty more to come from Ireland after win over Aussies, insists Ferris

Famous win: Stephen Ferris was lauded as one of Ireland's heroes

Stephen Ferris today insisted the best of Ireland has yet to be seen at this World Cup despite their remarkable 15-6 win over Australia.

Ireland's victory against the Tri‑Nations champions puts them on course to finish top of Pool C with only matches against Russia and Italy to come.

Ferris was one of the heroes of a result that has been lauded as the greatest in Ireland's rugby history. The powerhouse flanker said: "We didn't peak against Australia. There's a lot more to come from us.

"This wasn't a one-off performance, we knew this was brewing and we're glad it happened against Australia. We'll be targeting a big win on Sunday against Russia - and a big win against Italy after that. If we keep playing like we did against Australia, we can go a lot further in this tournament."

Backs coach Alan Gaffney said the team can build on their momentous victory.

"Captain Brian O'Driscoll's address after the game was very pertinent," added the Australian-born former Saracens director of rugby. "He said we're only 50 per cent of the way. We're not treating anyone with disrespect, it's not an Irish thing.

"We haven't qualified from our pool yet, we've still got two games to play. Russia are a growing side. Every time we play Italy it's a sticky game. They're confrontational and have a great set-piece. It's going to be a great Test for us."

Second row Paul O'Connell and centre Gordon D'Arcy could miss the Russia game due to hamstring injuries.

Wales back James Hook is in danger of sitting out the remaining Pool D games with Namibia and Fiji after injuring his shoulder in the 17-10 win over Samoa. Forward Dan Lydiate will have a scan on an injured ankle.
