Southgate dreams of Portugal

Gareth Southgate, who has dropped out of England's squad to face Denmark with a thigh injury, still believes he has a chance of playing in next summer's Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

It was thought his England career was over after Sven-Goran Eriksson overlooked him for several squads and critical remarks the Middlesbrough defender made in a recent book, but Southgate was called up for Sunday's game.

The 33-year-old had to pull out but revealed today he had telephoned Eriksson to assure the Swede he remains keen to play for England. "I wanted to make him aware I am still very keen to be part of the squad," said the 33-year-old.

"I know many people had written me off, but I never gave up hope. It was a bit of a surprise to be called up after missing out on the last few squads but we're playing much better now and I feel I'm also showing improved form."

There was speculation Eriksson may have left out Southgate because of comments about the Swede's style in the player's autobiography.

"I was trying to give a balanced view," said Southgate. "What I wanted to put over was that he is a calmer, more calculating type of coach.

"I haven't spoken to Mr Eriksson about the book. He has said he doesn't have a problem with it and that's good enough."
