'Cheese grater' torch goes on show

10 April 2012

The London Olympic torch goes on display this week in an exhibition of the best designs in the world.

The triangular aluminium tube, which has been compared with a cheese grater, was created by east London designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and nominated by designer Sebastian Conran who said it "represents traditional values executed in a modern manner".

It joins nearly 90 other nominations in the show at the Design Museum for the annual Design of the Year competition. Other contenders for the honour include Kate Middleton's wedding dress and the Olympic velodrome.

The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs until July 15. The winner will be announced on April 24.
