Half of Olympic village workers come from abroad

5 April 2012

Half the builders employed on the Government's Olympic village project are foreign workers, official statistics revealed today.

Data released by the Olympic Delivery Authority showed that of the 5,381 workers, 48 per cent were non Britons.

Most of the migrant builders come from Eastern Europe with the village workforce made up of 11 per cent Romanians, nine per cent Lithuanians and seven per cent Bulgarians.

The disclosure will cause embarrassment for Olympics chiefs and ministers as the Games project has been hailed as an opportunity to boost domestic employment during the recession.
