James Guy targets Tokyo 2020 Olympics relay gold after Team GB clinch silver in Rio

James Guy today vowed Britain will replace the US as swimming relay kings at the next Olympics as he set his sights on a gold rush in Tokyo.

Silver medals for Guy’s 200m freestyle relay squad and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor gave Britain their best Olympic Games in the pool since Los Angeles 1984, with more medals still possible.

After spearheading the British quartet in the relay final, Guy, 20, said: “The oldest guy on our team [Daniel Wallace] is 23. It shows there’s so much potential there. In Tokyo, we’re going to be at our prime. We’ll be fully grown men and we’ll be hunting that gold.

“I think we can catch the US but we’re still young boys, we’re an up-and-coming team and anything can happen in four years.”

Guy finished second to Michael Phelps, who won his 21st gold medal and looks likely to retire after Rio.

Guy’s medal hopes in the 200m and 400m freestyle were dashed when he finished fourth and sixth.

Britain have six medals in Rio, four of which have come from the swimmers.
