Emma Wilson took a superb bronze on her Olympic debut in the women’s windsurfing for Team GB at Tokyo 2020.

Yungxiu Lu of China held off a frenetic challenge from 2016 Olympic champion Charline Picon of France to take gold.

The 22-year-old Wilson was already guaranteed a medal after winning four of her 12 races heading into Saturday’s final.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “I wanted to win but any medal, I’m super happy.

“You never know if you will be here again so you just have to enjoy it. I gave it everything and it’s amazing.

“It means so much, I dreamed of winning a medal since I was a little kid watching Usain Bolt and Jess Ennis.”

After a delayed start due to the lack of wind, the 36-year-old Picon attacked from the start and Lu struggled to keep up as she found herself slipping down the field.

Despite Picon’s lead, Lu knew that a top-four finish would be enough as long as Wilson didn’t win, and she recovered by the midpoint of the race, eventually crossing the line third behind Picon and Wilson.

The three jumped into the water and celebrated together before jumping up on their boards again to steer them back to shore.

Kiran Badsloe is set to take the gold in the men’s event if he can start and finish the race without being disqualified.
