Steven Gerrard to miss out for Liverpool

13 April 2012

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard trained on his own this morning at the club's Melwood base but will not be fit for tomorrow's home game against Fulham.

The England midfielder, who missed England's win in Berlin on Wednesday due to a torn groin muscle, did what little work he could today away from the first-team squad and is a doubt for next Wednesday's Champions League clash with Marseille at Anfield.

Gerrard was injured at Bolton last weekend and manager Rafael Benitez said he would be "out for between seven and 10 days".

A scan confirmed the muscle damage but England wanted to assess the injury for themselves and Benitez is known to be upset that his captain was forced to make what turned out to be a fruitless 400-mile trip to the national squad's hotel in Watford.

On the plus side for Benitez, striker Fernando Torres is in line for his first start for almost two months after recovering from a hamstring problem. The Spaniard played 30 minutes for his national team on Wednesday and suffered no ill effects.
