Still reflects on 'massive disappointment'

13 April 2012

Barnet director of football John Still could not hide his disappointment after the 3-2 home defeat to Torquay condemned them to the conference.

However, Still praised his players for their efforts, but a first half horror show left them too much to do.

Barnet went 3-0 down and missed a penalty before two late goals game them a lifeline.

He said: "I can sum up the disappointment for me and it is massive. The last 10 games have been a mammoth task to try and rectify a situation that was going downhill.

"Everyone has done everything they've can. Sometimes things go against you - it just happens."

Still also insisted that his team's relegation had gone further back than the Torquay result.

He added: "People will look back at the penalty but it goes further than that because the games that we played up until now seemed to have just slipped away here and there.

"We had a long way to come from and found ourselves in a sort of last-chance saloon - it didn't quite work.

"It's a terrible, terrible feeling - the lads were silent. I sat them all down and thanked everyone for their efforts in the 10 games that I've been in charge."

Still conceded that Currie's penalty miss had been crucial but was already looking forward to the challenge of helping his side bounce back.

"The penalty was obviously very crucial but I pointed out to them that in terms of effort and determination they couldn't have given more.

"We've got to win the league we're going into. The most important thing that we should be looking at is trying to work out a way of how we can get back into the Football League."

Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous was too devastated to speak at length but could not help having a dig at Chesterfield, who controversially won promotion despite being found guilty of financial irregularities.

He said: "The better team won on the day. I'm too gutted to say too much - at least we played to the rules in getting relegated."
