Stunned Pires wants place back

Robert Pires spoke today of his determination to win back his place at Arsenal after being dropped for the fiery clash at Mancester United.

Pires, who signed a new three-year contract before the start of the season, paid the price on Sunday for his indifferent form and the shock 3-0 home defeat by Inter Milan in the Champions League a week ago.

"I was disappointed not to be in the team but it was a tactical decision by the manager and you have to respect that," said the Frenchman, who played no part in the goalless draw with United.

"But the season is a long one and there are many games to go. There will be many other opportunities for me."

Pires conceded has been below his best but added: "The preparation for the season was difficult because of the Confederations Cup."

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed today that United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be out for three months as he recovers from knee surgery.

The 30-year-old Norwegian underwent surgery this week after struggling with the problem since pre-season.
