Super start for Stenson

12 April 2012

European Ryder Cup player Henrik Stenson did his best to overshadow world number one Tiger Woods in the Target World Challenge in California.

Woods is the host of the season-ending event at Thousand Oaks but his first-round 68 meant he had to settle for a share of second place with Geoff Ogilvy.

Stenson carded a six-under-par 66 to put himself in early contention for the 1.35 million US dollars (£688,214) first prize put up by Woods.

Paul Casey, Fred Couples, John Daly and Colin Montgomerie all finished at three under and are tied for fourth. Chris DiMarco and Jose Maria Olazabal are tied for eighth at two under.

Defending champion Luke Donald struggled to a four-over 76 and is 15th in the 16-player field.
