Tancock takes bronze

Liam Tancock broke the Commonwealth record as he claimed bronze for Britain in the 100metres backstroke at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne.

The University of Loughborough swimmer, 21, recorded a time of 53.61 seconds to hand his team their first medal at the Rod Laver Arena.

American Aaron Peirsol took gold with a new world record time of 52.98secs.

Former world champion James Gibson failed to qualify for the final of the 50m breaststroke after finishing 11th in the semi-finals.

American Michael Phelps smashed the 200metres freestyle world record to claim another gold medal.

The 21-year-old, who helped secure the United States' first gold of the competition in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Monday, stormed to victory in one minute 43.86 seconds, shaving 0.2secs off the previous best set by Ian Thorpe six years ago.

Natalie Coughlin claimed another world record for America as she broke her own mark to win the 100m backstroke in 59.44secs.
