Andy Murray fought through tiredness and shoulder trouble to reach the third round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Murray became the first man to retain an Olympic singles title on Sunday, and barely three days later he was back on court as he starts his preparations for the US Open, which starts in 11 days’ time in New York

The British top seed beat Argentina’s Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-2 to set up a third-found tie with South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

Murray had treatment on his shoulder in a tight first set.

The Briton said: “It’s really humid here, quite different to the conditions in Rio.

“The court here is pretty fast. Rio was a lot slower than this. It took a bit of time to get into it, but I did all right.

“I did two short sessions yesterday and two short sessions today.

“I sometimes find that rather than doing one long session, if you’re going into new conditions, it’s a bit easier to do a couple of shorter sessions.

“I feel like I get my timing a bit quicker that way.”

Milos Raonic, who lost to Murray in the Wimbledon final, will tackle Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita after beating John Isner 7-6, 7-6.

Angelique Kerber, who will take over as world No1 if she wins the women’s event, beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-5 to reach the last 16.
