Heather Watson is into the second round at Wimbledon after a straight sets win against Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.

The British No1 negotiated her tricky first-round match impressively on Court Three, winning 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and five minutes.

Watson, 22, who reached the semi-finals at Eastbourne last week, is bidding to make it beyond the first week at the All England Club for the first time and faces German ninth seed Angelique Kerber or Poland's Urszula Radwanska in the next round.

Samantha Murray was brushed aside 6-1, 6-0 by former champions Maria Sharapova in her first-round match on Court One, losing in just 58 minutes.

Meanwhile, Naomi Broady will face Caroline Wozniacki in the second round after the former World No1 beat Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-0 on Court 12.

“I do not really know much about her,” said Wozniacki. “So I will have to have my team do a little bit of research and some scouting.”
