Nick Kyrgios tried to play down his latest controversy after clashing with the umpire and his own fans in his victory over Juan Monaco.

The Australian caused a stir in Monday’s first-round match after shouting “dirty scum” although he insisted the abuse was aimed at himself and not umpire Mohamed Lahyani. Yesterday, the 20-year-old argued with umpire Carlos Bernardes and a line judge.

He then told his ‘Fanatics’ supporter group, who were in the front row on Court 18, to “stop it” after barking “now is not a good time” when they chanted loudly during a heated moment with the umpire.

Kyrgios said: “I wasn’t causing any drama there.”

Later asked whether he was aware of his explosive behaviour on court, he said: “I guess I am, yeah.
