Thorpe breezes through heats

Ian Thorpe, aiming for a third gold medal, began a busy day in the pool by easing through the 200 metres freestyle heats at the world swimming championships in Japan today.

Thorpe, who was later facing the 200 m freestyle semi-finals and the 800m freestyle final in quick succession, settled for the third-fastest overall time in winning his heat in one minute 47.95 seconds.
