Tiger Woods fined by European Tour after spitting on green in Dubai

Tiger Woods was today found guilty of breaching the European Tour's code of conduct and will be fined an undisclosed sum for spitting during the Dubai Desert Classic.

The European Tour have confirmed that they have taken action against the World no3 after he caused outrage with his behaviour at the weekend.

The American became frustrated as he wasted a chance to end nearly 15 months without a victory.

Tournament director Mike Stewart reviewed the incident and decided that Woods' action breached the Tour's code of conduct.

"Consequently Tiger Woods will be fined," said a Tour statement.

One off the lead entering the final round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the 35-year-old dropped to joint 20th with a 75 rounded off with a double-bogey seven on the final hole.

But it was on the 12th green that Sky Sports commentator Ewen Murray was disgusted by Woods' behaviour.

After missing a par putt the American spat just a few feet from the hole and Murray said: "You look at his work ethics and he is a credit to the game and an inspiration to all of those who are trying to become professional golfers. But there are some parts of him that are just arrogant and petulant. Somebody now has to come behind him and maybe putt over his spit. It does not get much lower than that."

Woods played his final round with Sergio Garcia, who has gone even longer than Woods without a win - 28 months - and also slumped to a closing 75.

The tournament was won by Spain's Alvaro Quiros by a shot from South African James Kingston and Dane Anders Hansen.
