Tour of Zimbabwe in doubt

13 April 2012

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key may stop his country's cricket team from touring Zimbabwe in July.

The Black Caps are scheduled to visit the strife-torn nation for three one-day internationals under the International Cricket Council's future tours programme.

But Key said aside from the political and moral issues surrounding the Robert Mugabe regime in the African country, there were also health and security risks to the players which should be taken into account.

"I am deeply sceptical they should be going," he said. "In my view there are a number of risks.

"There are security risks for our players. There is the risk of cholera and quite frankly, we don't support that regime and we've made that quite clear."

New Zealand face a heavy fine from the ICC if they opt not to tour, unless they are ordered not to do so by the Government.
