Umpires to get TV help

13 April 2012

Umpires will be able to use television replays to help them make the right decisions in international matches.

At the moment, only debatable calls such as run-outs, stumpings, catches that may not have carried to a fielder and shots which may not have crossed the boundary can be referred to the third umpire.

Under the trail to be adopted at the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, umpires will be able to use television replays to check any decision throughout the game.

When a third umpire is contacted, they will be allowed two replays before passing information back to the on-field officials via radio headsets. The third umpire will, though, not be able to intervene of their own accord.

The ICC hope umpires will benefit from using the technology on such decisions as whether the ball has pitched outside leg stump in an lbw appeal and checking whether it has bounced immediately after a batsman played a shot.

"International umpires do a difficult job extremely well and receive too little credit," said former Indian batsman and now chairman of the ICC's cricket-playing committee, Sunil Gavaskar.

"The ICC wants to support umpires and if this proves technology can make that contribution, it will be considered for further use in the international game."

The new ICC panel of elite umpires and match referees will discuss the recommendation at a four-day workshop near Cape Town, South Africa which begins on Thursday.

ICC chief executive officer Malcolm Speed added: "We are not rushing forward and saying everything will be done via technology.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "We are leaving the decision with the umpire on the ground."
