Vaughan dreams of finals glory

12 April 2012

England are hoping to put a positive gloss on their tour of Australia after overcoming the odds to reach the Commonwealth Bank Series finals.

Victory over New Zealand by 14 runs at the Gabba sent them into a best-of-three with Ricky Ponting's Australia and they will have a boost in confidence after beating the Aussies by 92 runs in the last meeting between the two countries.

"You beat a team like Australia in Sydney and it is bound to boost morale and confidence and that is exactly what it did," said Vaughan. "There was a real atmosphere around the camp wanting to win this game. We wanted to get to the finals and wanted to play Australia again."

The win over New Zealand, founded on Paul Collingwood's first limited-overs international hundred since mid-2005 and a fine comeback in the field after an initial lack of discipline boosted New Zealand's chase of 271, completed a remarkable turnaround for England.

"I don't think you can gain anything from the way the Ashes went - we lost 5-0 and were beaten heavily by a better team, but this one-day series a week ago was looking pretty similar," added Vaughan.

"But we have fought and we have worked hard in practice and taken some confidence out of the practice sessions into the games.

"It is a great experience for a lot of these lads leading into the World Cup."

Collingwood, whose 106 was his first one-day international hundred since mid-2005 and his third overall, shared a crucial stand with the equally out-of-form Andrew Strauss, who hit 55.
