Vaughan one-day decision imminent

12 April 2012

England will end speculation about the one-day future of captain Michael Vaughan by making an official statement at the end of today's play against West Indies.

The pressure has increased on the 32-year-old Yorkshire batsman after failing to score a century in 86 one-day international appearances.

And as speculation mounted about whether he would announce his retirement from one-day international cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed they will release a statement immediately after the fourth day's play at Chester-le-Street.

Former England captains Graham Gooch and Nasser Hussain have both suggested Vaughan bow to the inevitable, particularly with a suspect right knee, and concentrate on the longer form of the game in recent days.

Gooch believes that despite Vaughan scoring a superb 79 off 68 balls in the final match of a doomed World Cup campaign, he should still step aside.

"He has led the side with distinction and innovation in Test cricket and had total respect from his players," said Gooch. "Sadly, however, he hasn't enjoyed the same amount of success in the one-day format.

"Although Vaughan posted one of his more fluent innings in the dead-rubber win over the West Indies, I believe that the time is right for him to stand aside and retire from the one-day game."

Hussain, who led the one-day side before stepping aside to make room for Vaughan after the 2003 World Cup, was more forthright in his views.

Talking to Sky Sports News, Vaughan said: "I personally would like Michael Vaughan's body looked after. He has been an exceptional Test match captain but if he plays in all the one-dayers, I don't think he will last.

"I would like to see it handled delicately so he can go out on his own terms. He's made a brilliant leader but it gives someone the opportunity to take that side on."
