Wasps set tough task for Foley

Wasps 23 Bath 10

Michael Foley may have felt his timing was perfect in retiring from the world champion Wallabies just as their crown begins to slip but he couldn't have picked a worse time to join Bath.

Head coach Jon Callard described the seventh defeat of this calamitous season as comfortably Bath's worst display and his new assistant Foley must be wondering what he has let himself in for.

The Australia hooker quit the international scene after last Saturday's victory over Wales and arrived in Bath this week. Callard said: 'Perhaps the players tried too hard to impress the new coach.

'It's a shame that Michael, who is a World Cup winner and is stepping out after winning his 50th cap last week, is joining us in this situation.'

Wasps are now locked with Bath and Leeds on 15 points at the bottom of the table.

Wasps opened the scoring with a penalty try in the 18th minute which was converted by fly-half Alex King. Four minutes later, flanker Joe Worsley pick up a loose ball to touch down. King added the conversion.

Full back Matt Perry scored for Bath in the 36th minute with a penalty, but Wasps extended their lead with a King effort in the 40th minute.

Gavin Thomas, having returned to the field after being sin-binned, took the home defence by surprise with a try, converted by Perry.

With Wasps leading 17-10, Scotland wing Kenny Logan hit the target twice in the last six minutes to make it two wins in a row.
