Webster set for Rangers switch

12 April 2012

Wigan defender Andy Webster is on the verge of joining Rangers on loan until the end of the season.

Rangers coach Ian Durrant, who has been put in charge of first-team training after the exit of Paul Le Guen, confirmed the Scotland defender was being put through his paces by the club's medical team.

Durrant said: "He is going through a medical just now and if it all goes through he will be a great acquisition for the club."

The 24-year-old former Hearts player joined Barclays Premiership side Wigan in the summer but failed to win a regular place in Paul Jewell's team.

Webster became the first player to invoke a new FIFA rule that allowed him to leave Hearts a season before his four-year contract ended.

Hearts and Wigan have still yet to agree a fee for the defender, with the Edinburgh club looking for £5million and the Barclays Premiership outfit expecting to pay up the last 12 months of his contract at Tynecastle.

FIFA granted Wigan permission to sign the player but the world body are yet to rule on a compensation package.

A calf injury delayed Webster's debut for Jewell's side but he has only played four games and found himself out of favour at the JJB Stadium.

Wigan won all four games Webster played in - and kept clean sheets in three of them - but the former Arbroath player's error gifted Charlton a goal in his last match for the club on November 11.

Jewell had recently challenged Webster to win his place back and adjust to the pace of the English top-flight.
