Whelan's heart was not in it

Noel Whelan has admitted his decision to leave Millwall less than halfway through a one-year deal was the "biggest" of his life.

The former Middlesbrough striker's contract was cancelled by mutual consent before Christmas and he returned north saying he missed his family too much.

Whelan, 29, is training with Sheffield United and hopes another club will step in.

He admitted he struggled to adapt during his five-month spell in the south. Whelan said: "It was terrible being so far away from my family. It was heartbreaking to hear my two-year-old on the phone every night.

"It was the biggest decision of my life, but Dennis Wise (Millwall manager) is a good friend and I could not justify taking the money when my heart was not in it."
