Wigan eye Robinson to fill Baines boots

13 April 2012

Wigan manager Chris Hutchings will move for West Bromwich Albion's Paul Robinson if England Under 21 left back Leighton Baines is lured from the JJB Stadium by Sunderland.

Baines held talks with manager Roy Keane yesterday but hopes Sunderland's £6million bid will be matched by David Moyes at Everton, his boyhood club.

Moyes, though, has £6m Manchester United striker Alan Smith as No 1 target and a tight budget.

Hutchings is confident he can tie up Fulham skipper Michael Brown's return north after Lawrie Sanchez accepted a £2m bid for the former Manchester City and Sheffield United midfielder.

Brown, 30, held talks in Wigan yesterday after being left behind from Fulham's preseason tour to the Far East.

Sanchez said: "We have had an offer for the player which we have accepted. Michael is in Wigan and there are more talks going on.

"Hopefully it will be resolved one way or another quickly for the sake of everyone."

Luton defender Leon Barnett is talking over a £1.5m move to West Brom, which could rise to £3m. Albion have taken Portuguese full back Tininho on trial.
