Wildcats close in on Newton

12 April 2012

Wakefield are close to signing Bradford's former Great Britain hooker Terry Newton.

The Bulls confirmed that the 30-year-old former Leeds and Wigan player will be leaving the club at the end of the season after failing to agree new terms.

Newton, who has made 92 appearances for Bradford in four seasons, is out of contract in November and was offered only a 12-month deal.

Bulls chairman Peter Hood said: "We were prepared to consider a one-year contract extension, but Terry wanted the security that a two-year deal would offer him.

"On behalf of the club I would like to express my thanks for his contribution to the Bulls and wish him every success for the future."

The Wildcats are thought to have come to an agreement with Newton after he was given permission to talk to other clubs.

"Bradford made Terry an offer, and obviously the length of the contract was an issue with him," said Wakefield coach John Kear.

"We'd love to secure his services and, with any luck, we will do. He's obviously a gifted player and a seasoned international.

"He's tended to be with successful clubs, so I'm really pleased that we're being linked with him. It shows that we're developing as a team and as a club."

The likely arrival of Newton raises a question mark over the future of former Huddersfield hooker Brad Drew, who is out of contract and has been linked with a move to Super League neighbours Castleford.
