Wilkinson op a success

14 April 2012

England's injured World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson could be back in training within 10 days after a neck operation, according to his dad.

Phil Wilkinson admitted it was a nervous time for the family when the Newcastle Falcons fly-half underwent surgery yesterday but the 24-year-old is expected to leave hospital today.

And Wilkinson senior believes his son will be keen to get back into action as soon as possible.

'As a parent it was a rather anxious time waiting for news,' Phil Wilkinson told The Sun.

'But I have received a call from the hospital saying they are pleased with the way it went, which is a great relief.

'Jonny is recovering well, he's doing fine and we will be meeting the surgeon together soon to talk it over.

'It was causing us some worry because it was a delicate operation, as any involving the neck and nerves is bound to be.

'The great news is that we expect him to be back in training in as little as 10 days.

'Obviously he won't be doing any physical work but he will be able to practise his kicking and other routines worked out by Steve Black, the fitness coach of Newcastle Falcons.

'Fortunately he is very fit at the moment so the lay-off won't affect him that much.'
