Wladimir Klitschko believes he achieved "success" in last month's defeat to Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium.

A post-war record 90,000 fans were in attendance and witnessed a modern-day classic as the heavyweights went toe-to-toe in an enthralling contest.

Klitschko put the British fighter down in the fifth but Joshua recovered to claim a thrilling 11th-round knockout victory and add the WBA title to his IBF crown.

Klitschko may have been unable to reclaim his titles but emerged from the bout with his reputation enhanced, having produced one of the best performances of his illustrious career.

A rematch could still be on the cards and the 41-year-old is adamant he achieved more in defeat than he would have done through victory.

"I never thought I would say such a thing, but: in defeat, I achieved much greater success than I would have had I won," Klitschko wrote on LinkedIn.

"The responses that I received and continue to receive after this night of boxing are overwhelming.

"I now understand that success does not necessarily mean achieving a set goal. Instead, success means achieving the best possible result.

"Sometimes we cannot see beforehand what the best possible result might be," he added.
