World Cup-winning Boks return home

12 April 2012

Newly-crowned world champions South Africa received a rapturous welcome when they arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

The Springboks, who overcame England 15-6 in the World Cup final in Paris on Saturday night, were greeted by thousands of fans from all backgrounds.

Captain John Smit admitted that he was "overwhelmed" by the reception, while the country's deputy sports minister, Gert Oosthuizen, told the squad: "You not only united us - you filled us with pride and made us winners."

He added: "Let's take this positive momentum forward and build, and do not forget that 2011 (South Africa host the World Cup) is around the corner."

The squad will regroup in Johannesburg on Friday for a series of parades and public appearances across the country.
