Young salvages point for England

England's Euro 2012 qualification hopes suffered a major setback when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Switzerland at Wembley despite recovering from a two-goal deficit.

England paid the price for some woeful defending - most notably from goalkeeper Joe Hart - as Tranquillo Barnetta struck twice in three minutes from set-pieces.

Frank Lampard's penalty reduced the arrears before half-time and his second-half replacement, Ashley Young, salvaged a point for England.

There was an early moment of danger for England when the ball broke kindly into the path of Eren Derdiyok but his low left-footed drive did not extend Hart.

The Swiss were looking the more threatening and Hart parried aside a curling attempt from Xherdan Shaqiri after Barnetta's shot had been deflected into his path but England were rocked as Barnetta opened the scoring when his curling free-kick flew over the head of Rio Ferdinand and the wrong-footed Hart into the far corner of the net.

It got worse for England after they gave away another free-kick in a similar position after Scott Parker up-ended Reto Ziegler and Barnetta again curled the ball in as the defensive wall of James Milner and Theo Walcott inexplicably parted and Hart was caught out at his near post and could only kick the ball into his own net.

England needed a quickfire response and were given a lifeline 60 seconds later through Lampard's penalty. Johan Djourou brought down Jack Wilshere and Lampard's spot-kick contained too much power for Diego Benaglio even though he dived the right way.

Half-time replacement Young needed only six minutes to justify Capello's decision to bring him off the substitutes' bench as he netted the equaliser. Milner's cross was chested down by Leighton Baines into the path of the Aston Villa player, whose low shot beat the dive of Benaglio.

Bent missed a golden chance to put England ahead when Young's fierce shot was parried by Benaglio straight into the path of him 12 yards out but the Aston Villa striker sidefooted his shot over the crossbar.

Ferdinand was booked in the 88th minute for bringing down Gokhan Inler, and Admir Mehmedi was only inches wide with a low cross-shot in injury-time and then Stewart Downing wasted a glorious chance to win it for England when he shot into the side-netting seconds before the final whistle.
