The end of the travel brochure

The routine of booking and taking holidays will be changed beyond all recognition in the next 20 years, according to the study.

Paper brochures will be replaced by "virtual holidays", allowing travellers to "walk" through their hotel room and its locality before they have even booked.

Computerised "artificial intelligence" agents will put together individually tailored holidays, with details such as preferred style of restaurants taken into account.

Once at the resort, advanced 3G phones will be used to plan and organise. For example, simply by pointing a phone at a car-rental sign we will get details of prices and availability.

Tour operators will put far more effort into meal planning, providing menus with dietary information to help obese travellers.

Single rooms will no longer be charged a supplement as it becomes ever more common to travel alone.
